TRICYCLE, A MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION IN LAGOS, NIGERIA
Recently,
states government in Nigeria banned commercial motorcyclist from the streets of
most urban areas including state capital. They replaced the motor bike also
called okada in Nigeria with tricycle. The reason for the banned
was as a result of high rate of death from motor bike, high crime rate
committed by criminals using motorcycle, Increasing rate of motorcycle related
incidents in Nigeria, Increasing rate of crime committed by persons using motor
bike, Noisy and distracting nature of motor bikes on our streets, they charge
commuter exorbitantly compared to buses and taxicab
Moreover, Riding on motorcycle gets
you faster to your main destination, Motorcycle takes you directly to your
house unlike buses that drop you on the junction or expressway, Motorcycle
helps you to locate street addresses that you as a stranger do not know. These
bikes can easily be gotten as they are all everywhere.
Tricycle
gained popularity as far back as the early 80"s due to the failure of the
Nigerian political leadership to create jobs and development the country large
infrastructure which include the country transport system.
Thus,
Nigerian in their million take to "okada" a word used to describe
commercial motorcycle rider, to get to their various destination.
ADVANTAGE
OF TRICYCLE
They are
safer means of transport compared to motor bike
They are
almost like the conventional cars with roof that protect you from the sun and
rain
Riders do
not have to buy helmet to drive a tricycle
DISADVANTAGE OF TRICYCLE
Tricycle is
very expensive compare to motor cycle or motor bike
They need
some level of skills to drive tricycle as it is a little different from motor
cycle, other motorist especially the cars and buses are not too happy seeing
tricycle share the same lane with them. And they use their four wheel structure
to threaten these tricycles that is a three wheel drive.
Now the
Lagos state government has banned tricycle from major roads and highways in
Nigeria.
